The Employees' Provident Fund Organisation (EPFO) has established distinct categories to simplify the rules for withdrawing advances from PF accounts. Employees can withdraw funds (PF advance) to cover expenses such as medical treatment, children's education, weddings, and home purchases. While there is no limit on the number of withdrawals for certain needs, specific limits apply in other cases.

For millions of salaried employees, the PF corpus serves as a vital financial support system during difficult times. Accordingly, the guidelines issued by the EPFO categorize various essential needs and specify the maximum number of withdrawals allowed for each.

**How many times can funds be withdrawn for medical treatment?**
According to EPFO guidelines, employees can avail of a PF advance for medical treatment—whether for themselves or for family members. There is no limit on the number of times an advance can be withdrawn under this category; employees can utilize this facility whenever the need arises.

**Limits set for education and weddings**
A facility to withdraw PF advances for children's education is also available. However, under this category, an advance can be taken a maximum of 10 times during the entire tenure of membership. Similarly, employees can take a PF advance to cover wedding expenses—whether for themselves or for family members. A maximum of five withdrawals is permitted under this category during the membership period.

**Advances available for everything from buying a house to repairs**
The EPFO has also placed housing-related needs in a separate category. Under this, employees can avail of advances for four specific purposes:

Purchasing a house, flat, or plot.
Constructing a new house.
Repaying a home loan.
Renovating, altering, or repairing a house.
A combined limit of five withdrawals is set for all these housing-related needs over the course of the membership period. However, the relevant eligibility criteria must be met for each withdrawal. Facility available under special circumstances too
The guidelines also contain specific provisions for special circumstances. Permission has been granted to withdraw an advance up to a maximum of two times during a financial year under special circumstances notified by the Central Board of Trustees (CBT) or the EPFO.

What are the eligibility criteria for all categories?
According to the guidelines, after completing 12 months of EPF membership, an advance of up to 75% of the total PF balance—comprising the employee's and employer's contributions along with the accrued interest—can be withdrawn. However, the 75% withdrawal limit does not imply that the employee will necessarily receive this specific amount in every situation; the actual amount will depend on the specific purpose, applicable rules, and eligibility.
