EPFO grants relief to companies following the hike in the wage ceiling; extends the deadline for filing the ECR..
The Employees' Provident Fund Organisation (EPFO) has provided significant relief to employers and companies facing difficulties with salary and PF (EPS) calculations this month. The EPFO has extended the deadline for filing the Electronic Challan-cum-Return (ECR) and depositing PF contributions for the wage month of September 2026. The original deadline of October 15 has been extended to October 31, 2026. Let us understand the implications of this announcement.
Why was the deadline extended?
It is worth noting that on September 17, 2026, the government raised the EPF wage ceiling from ₹15,000 to ₹25,000 per month. Since this change occurred mid-month, the PF calculation for September was effectively split into two parts. This sudden change caused significant technical and administrative challenges for companies and employers in recalculating payrolls, salary structures, and individual PF contributions for employees.
In light of these difficulties, several industry bodies and employers appealed to the EPFO to extend the deadline—a request the organization accepted.
What happens if the ECR is filed late?
If a company fails to deposit PF contributions on time, it may incur additional costs. Penalties and interest are levied based on the duration of the delay. Under EPFO regulations, Section 7Q stipulates that payments made after the due date may attract interest on the outstanding amount at a rate of 12% per annum. Additionally, under Section 14B, damages ranging from 5% to 25% of the outstanding amount may be imposed, depending on the duration of the delay and applicable rules.
How can a company file the ECR? You can follow the steps below to file the ECR:
First, visit the official EPFO Employer Portal and log in using your Establishment ID and password.
Go to the ECR section and prepare the details regarding employee salaries and PF contributions in the prescribed format.
Then, upload the prepared text file and carefully verify all the information.
Next, generate the challan and obtain the TRRN.
Make the payment for the specified amount using the challan and keep a record of the payment for your reference.
