The Employees' Provident Fund Organisation (EPFO) has simplified the process for members of the transgender community to change their name and gender. The EPFO has now clarified that the transgender identity certificate issued from the national portal will be considered a valid document for changing name and gender in EPF records.

A new circular issued by the EPFO states that the identity certificate or card issued from the [https://transgender.dosje.gov.in/] portal for transgender persons will be accepted for changing name and gender in EPFO records. The circular further states that this document will be considered part of the list of acceptable documents included in Annexure-II of the circular related to the Joint Declaration process issued on January 16, 2025.

Documents Required
To change their name and gender in EPF records, transgender individuals will need to submit some of the following documents:

Transgender Identity Card issued by the National Portal for Transgender Persons
Passport
Death Certificate
Birth Certificate
Driving License
Photo Identity Card issued by the Central/State Government, Union Territory, or PSU

The Joint Declaration process has been simplified based on the classification of members. The EPFO categorizes its members into three broad categories to determine how profile updates can be made. This includes members whose UAN is linked to Aadhaar and was generated after October 1, 2017. This includes members whose UAN was generated before October 1, 2017, but whose name, date of birth, gender, and Aadhaar are verified; members whose UAN is not verified with Aadhaar; those who do not have a UAN; and cases involving deceased members. The level of verification and approval depends on the member's category. Documents can be submitted by the member through DigiLocker, wherever possible, or uploaded as a single PDF file.
