The EPFO has given companies until October 15 to file the ECR for September 2026 and deposit PF contributions. Employers may face interest and penalties in the event of a delay.

If you are employed by a company and have PF deductions made from your salary every month, this information is crucial for you. To ensure that employees' PF funds are deposited on time, companies and employers are required to file an Electronic Challan-cum-Return (ECR) every month. This document contains details regarding employees' salaries and the contributions to be deposited into their PF accounts.

The Employees' Provident Fund Organisation (EPFO) has informed employers via a post on its official X (formerly Twitter) platform about the requirement to file the ECR for September 2026 and deposit outstanding PF dues. The deadline for filing the September 2026 ECR is October 15, 2026. Employers should complete this process promptly to avoid incurring interest and penalties due to delays.

ECR stands for Electronic Challan-cum-Return. Through this, employers submit details regarding employee salaries, PF, and related contributions to the EPFO. This facilitates the ongoing process of depositing funds into your PF account.

What is the penalty for a delay?

If employers fail to deposit PF contributions by the stipulated deadline, they may be required to pay an additional amount. Furthermore, interest and damages may be levied based on the duration of the delay.

Interest: Under Section 7Q of the Act, interest at a rate of 12% per annum may be charged on the outstanding amount for payments made after the prescribed deadline. Damage Charges: Under Section 14B, damages ranging from 5% to 25% of the outstanding amount may be levied, depending on the duration of the payment delay and applicable rules.

How to file an ECR on the EPFO portal?

First, visit the official EPFO Employer Portal and log in using your Establishment ID and password.
Go to the ECR section and prepare the details regarding employee salaries and PF contributions in the prescribed format.
Upload the prepared text file and carefully verify all the information.
Next, generate the challan and obtain the TRRN.
Make the payment of the requisite amount using the challan and keep a record of the payment for your reference.
