EPF accounts of over 20 lakh employees in the country have been closed; find out how you can check your status..
The EPFO scheme is crucial for salaried employees in the country, as it facilitates retirement savings. A fixed portion of the salary is deposited into the EPF account. However, many people are unaware of the rules governing EPF accounts. Often, EPF accounts remain unused for long periods after an employee leaves a job, causing them to become 'inoperative.' Recently, the government revealed that the EPF accounts of lakhs of employees across the country have become inactive.
Disclosing figures on inactive EPF accounts, the government stated that over 20 lakh accounts have become inoperative. Shobha Karandlaje, Minister of State for Labour and Employment, informed the Rajya Sabha that the number of inoperative EPF accounts stood at 1,172,923 in the 2020-21 financial year. By the 2023-24 financial year, this figure had risen to approximately 2,155,387.
**Reasons for EPF accounts becoming inoperative**
The government explained that there are several reasons for EPF accounts becoming inoperative, such as an employee failing to conduct transactions or transfer the old account to a new one after quitting a job. Additionally, issues related to KYC and Aadhaar seeding have also led to some accounts being classified as inoperative.
If you have recently changed jobs or failed to transfer your EPF balance after leaving a previous job, you should check the status of your account.
**How to check EPF status**
First, visit the official EPFO portal.
Log in using your UAN and password.
After signing in, click on 'Service History' under the 'View' section.
Here, you will see details regarding your old and new PF accounts.
You can view account transactions and the balance through the EPFO passbook service.

If your EPF account is inoperative, you should transfer the balance from the old account to your new one.
