Providing incorrect age information on a train ticket can lead to trouble during the journey. If incorrect or incomplete information is found, the Railways can levy additional fare and excess charges; therefore, it is essential to check your ticket.

If you carefully fill in details like name, train number, date, and seat preference when booking a train ticket but overlook the age column, this information is relevant for you. If the age recorded on the ticket differs from that on your identity proof, this minor error could cause problems during the journey. In such cases, under Railway rules, you could be charged an additional fare or a penalty.

According to Railway regulations, you may be required to present your ticket and—if necessary—important documents like your Aadhaar card during the journey. Therefore, it is crucial to thoroughly verify all details while booking the ticket. Let us find out if a TTE can demand extra money due to an incorrect age recorded on the ticket.

Can a penalty be imposed for an incorrect age on the ticket?

Under Section 54 of the Railways Act, 1989, an authorized railway official can ask a passenger to present their ticket for inspection during the journey. If the age recorded on your ticket differs from the information in your identity documents, questions may arise during ticket checking. However, the specific penalty amount—or whether Section 138 applies in a particular case—depends on the circumstances and the investigation conducted by the Railways.

What should you do if the age on the ticket is incorrect?

If you notice an error regarding age or any other detail while booking the ticket, try to get it corrected by the Railways before the journey begins. This is because a seemingly minor mistake could lead to a major dispute during ticket inspection.

Why did the case involving a ₹7,035 recovery charge make headlines?

A post on the social media platform X is currently generating a lot of buzz; in it, a passenger claimed that while booking a ticket, they accidentally entered their age as 1 year instead of 24. According to the passenger, despite this error, they did not avail themselves of any fare concession and possessed a valid identity card.

The passenger further claims that during ticket inspection, an additional amount of ₹7,035 was charged—categorized as a "WITHOUT TICKET" penalty—bringing the total cost of the journey to ₹10,624.05. The passenger questioned the basis for this additional charge, noting that the base fare remains unchanged regardless of the correct age being entered and that they held a valid identity card.
