In a major initiative to empower women and improve financial inclusion, the Bima Sakhi Yojana launched by the Central Government has been yielding promising results. With more than 2.05 lakh women already enrolled, the scheme has enabled thousands to earn a steady income by working as insurance agents with the Life Insurance Corporation of India (LIC). Many of them are now earning up to ₹7,000 per month.

Launched to Uplift Women Financially

The Bima Sakhi Yojana was officially launched on 9th December 2024 with a mission to bring women, especially from rural and semi-urban areas, into the formal financial ecosystem. By working as LIC insurance agents, these women are now not only financially independent but also playing a crucial role in spreading insurance awareness across the country.

As per the recent data presented in the Lok Sabha by Minister of State for Finance Pankaj Chaudhary, more than 2.05 lakh women have become part of this scheme till date. During FY 2024-25, LIC paid ₹62.36 crore as commissions and stipends to these Bima Sakhis. For FY 2025-26, LIC has allocated a budget of ₹520 crore, out of which ₹115.13 crore has already been disbursed as of 14 July 2025.

What Makes Bima Sakhi Yojana Stand Out?

Under this scheme, women appointed as Bima Sakhis are provided with:

  • Monthly Stipend for 3 Years

    • ₹7,000 per month in the 1st year

    • ₹6,000 per month in the 2nd year

    • ₹5,000 per month in the 3rd year

  • Attractive Commissions
Bima Sakhis earn commissions on every LIC policy they sell, helping them supplement their monthly income significantly.

  • Career Growth Opportunities
Women who have graduated and completed 5 years in the scheme become eligible to apply for the Apprentice Development Officer (ADO) position in LIC, a stable government job.

  • Incentives for Top Performers
Those who consistently perform well are rewarded with additional incentives to keep them motivated.

Eligibility and Application Details

One of the highlights of this initiative is its inclusive eligibility criteria. Here are the basic requirements:

  • Women aged 18 to 70 years

  • Minimum education qualification: Class 10 pass

  • Should not be an existing LIC agent or a relative of an LIC employee

The scheme ensures transparency and fair selection, especially by focusing on rural empowerment. LIC has also partnered with the Ministry of Rural Development to expand the reach of Bima Sakhi Yojana in interior parts of India.

Beyond Income: A Step Toward Social Change

While earning a regular income is a key benefit, the scheme is also about building confidence and creating leadership opportunities for women. By engaging women as community-level insurance ambassadors, the initiative is reshaping the perception of female workforce participation in rural India.

Many Bima Sakhis are now supporting their families, funding children’s education, and contributing to household savings, which marks a substantial shift in the socio-economic fabric of their communities.

Final Thoughts

The Bima Sakhi Yojana is a shining example of how well-structured, inclusive policies can drive real change. With growing participation and government support, this scheme is not just providing jobs—it’s creating leaders, strengthening rural economies, and promoting financial literacy.

For women seeking financial independence and a meaningful career path, this scheme presents a powerful opportunity to make a difference — both in their lives and in their communities.
