Electricity Bill: Electricity to become costlier in Delhi; surcharge announcement effective from the next bill

The Delhi Electricity Regulatory Commission (DERC) has approved an additional 'Fuel and Power Purchase Adjustment Surcharge' (FPPAS) of over 7-8% for three electricity distribution companies (discoms) due to rising power purchase costs and surging demand during the intense summer heat. This additional surcharge will be over and above the existing 10% FPPAS limit and will be included in the consumers' next billing cycle. This move will have a major impact on the city's electricity consumers.
Why was the surcharge increased?
The electricity distribution companies—BRPL (BSES Rajdhani Power Limited), BYPL (BSES Yamuna Power Limited), and TPDDL (Tata Power Delhi Distribution Limited)—stated that electricity demand spiked significantly during this year's summer, forcing them to procure power from external sources at higher rates. Seeking relief through separate petitions, the companies had claimed FPPAS rates of 31.64%, 24.02%, and 23.71% respectively for the month of June.
New total surcharge for the companies
BRPL (BSES Rajdhani Power Limited) – Total surcharge will rise to 17.94%.
BYPL (BSES Yamuna Power Limited) – Total surcharge will rise to 17.43%.
TPDDL (Tata Power Delhi Distribution Limited) – Total surcharge will rise to 18.50%.
Who will get relief?
Consumers availing the benefits of the Delhi government's electricity subsidy scheme (especially those receiving free electricity for up to 200 units) will not be affected by this additional hike. In other words, domestic consumers whose consumption is up to 200 units and who have opted for the subsidy will continue to receive a zero bill, just as before.
