Tamil Nadu Electricity Bill: If your electricity bill has suddenly shot up in recent months, this information is crucial for you. The Electricity Department in Tamil Nadu has taken a significant step following consumer complaints regarding inflated bills. The department has decided to re-examine approximately 3.7 lakh electricity connections across the state. These connections showed an unusual increase in electricity consumption and billing amounts compared to the previous billing cycle.

In fact, many consumers complained that their electricity bills for July were excessively high compared to the previous billing period. Subsequently, people voiced their concerns on social media and various grievance platforms, demanding that the department review the bills.

Why is the inspection being conducted?

A large number of consumers witnessed a sudden, significant spike in their electricity bills.
Many suspected irregularities in the meter reading and billing processes.
There were persistent demands for an investigation from the public via social media and grievance portals.
Based on this, the Electricity Department has launched a special inspection drive.

Which connections will be inspected?

Following this decision, inspections will specifically target connections that recorded a significant increase in electricity consumption in July 2026 compared to May 2026. A total of 3.7 lakh connections have been included in this special inspection drive.

What will the Electricity Department check?

Whether the meter reading is accurate.
Whether there are any technical issues with the billing.
Whether electricity consumption was assessed correctly.
If any discrepancies are found during the inspection, they will be rectified immediately.

By when will the process be completed?

V. Arun Roy, Chairman and Managing Director of the Tamil Nadu Electricity Board (TNEB), has specifically instructed officials to thoroughly investigate all suspicious cases. He has also ordered that this entire process be completed by August 7.

How will consumers benefit?

The electricity department states that the primary objective of this campaign is to address complaints regarding incorrect or inflated electricity bills. Consequently, if any billing errors are detected in a consumer's bill, the department will make the necessary corrections to ensure that people do not face issues related to overbilling.
