E-Shram card holders will receive a monthly pension of ₹3000; here is what you need to do..
For workers in the unorganized sector—including street vendors, domestic workers, and other laborers—there is an option to secure financial stability in their old age. Under the central government’s 'Pradhan Mantri Shram Yogi Maan-dhan' (PM-SYM) scheme, eligible workers can receive a monthly pension of ₹3,000 upon reaching the age of 60. However, simply obtaining an 'e-Shram' card does not automatically trigger the monthly payment of ₹3,000; one must separately register for the pension scheme and make the required contributions.
The objective of this scheme is to provide a regular income during old age to individuals who do not have access to pension benefits like those available to formal-sector employees. While registering on the 'e-Shram' portal helps connect workers to various social security schemes, the ₹3,000 monthly pension is provided specifically under the terms and conditions of the 'Pradhan Mantri Shram Yogi Maan-dhan' scheme.
Who is eligible to apply for the ₹3,000 pension?
According to the official 'e-Shram' portal of the Ministry of Labour and Employment, the following criteria must be met to avail the benefits of the 'Pradhan Mantri Shram Yogi Maan-dhan' scheme:
Age: Applicants must be between 18 and 40 years old at the time of application.
Occupation: The applicant must be employed in the unorganized sector—for example, as a construction worker, domestic worker, rickshaw puller, street vendor, or other eligible laborer.
Monthly Income: ₹15,000 or less.
Other Conditions: The applicant must not be a member of the EPFO, ESIC, or the government-funded NPS, and must not be an income taxpayer.
Citizenship: The applicant must be a citizen of India.
How much contribution is required based on age?
Under this scheme, workers are required to make a specified monthly contribution until they reach the age of 60. The government also contributes an equal amount. The monthly contribution based on the age of entry is as follows:
18 years: ₹55
20 years: ₹61
25 years: ₹80
30 years: ₹105
35 years: ₹150
40 years: ₹200
This means that if an individual joins the scheme at the age of 18, they will need to contribute ₹55 every month, and the government will also contribute an equal amount of ₹55. Conversely, an individual joining the scheme at the age of 40 will need to contribute ₹200 every month.
