How to Apply for an E-Passport: India has taken a major step towards further advancing travel documentation by introducing a new e-passport. It's a chip-enabled passport booklet that aims to enhance security, process speed, and convenience for international travelers. This initiative, launched under the Passport Seva Programme (PSP 2.0), has placed India among the global leaders who use biometric travel documents. The process for applying for an e-passport is similar to that for a regular passport, but the embedded electronic chip and new verification systems make it more secure, faster, and modern. In this context, let's explore who can apply for an e-passport and the entire process...

What is an e-passport?
An e-passport looks similar to a regular Indian passport, but it contains a secure RFID chip and antenna. This chip securely stores your biometric details, as well as your personal details. The data is encrypted to ensure the same information as the digital record printed on the passport. A small golden symbol (chip mark) is printed below the national emblem on its cover, making it easy to identify.

Who can apply for an e-passport?

Any Indian citizen eligible for a regular passport can also apply for an e-passport. However, this facility is initially available only at select Passport Seva Kendras (PSKs) and Post Office Passport Seva Kendras (POPSKs) located in major cities. In the future, the government plans to gradually expand this service to all centers across the country so that more and more people can benefit from it.

How to apply for an e-passport?
First, register or log in to the Passport Seva Portal.
Now select the 'Apply for Fresh Passport / Re-issue' option and fill out the online form.
Pay the fees online and then book an appointment at your nearest Passport Seva Kendra.
Go to the appointment center on the scheduled date with your original documents. Your biometric data (photo + fingerprint) will be taken there.
Your file will then begin processing. Once approved, your e-passport will be sent to your registered address.
