Download this app before buying gold; check purity in minutes.
To verify the purity of gold or silver, you can check the HUID number marked on the jewelry using the 'Verify HUID' option in the BIS Care app. This provides information regarding the jeweler, the hallmarking center, and the jewelry's hallmarking details.
When buying gold, the biggest question is whether the jewelry—for which you are paying a substantial amount—is truly as pure as claimed. It is not easy to determine purity simply by looking at the jewelry's shine. However, there is no need to worry excessively about purity anymore. With the help of an app on your mobile phone, you can quickly verify details about hallmarked gold.
A hallmarking system is in place in India to certify the purity of gold and silver. It is regulated by the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS). The objective is to protect customers from fraud related to jewelry purity. A hallmark serves as proof that the jewelry complies with established standards.
BIS has introduced the BIS Care app to facilitate purity verification. Hallmarked gold jewelry bears the BIS mark, the karat or fineness grade, and a 6-digit alphanumeric HUID number.
How to verify using the HUID number
Before purchasing the jewelry, note the HUID number inscribed on it. Then, open the BIS Care app on your mobile and select the 'Verify HUID' option. Enter the jewelry's HUID number there.
As soon as you enter the number, details regarding the jewelry will appear on the app. This includes information such as the jeweler's name, the hallmarking center, the type of jewelry, and the date of hallmarking. This allows customers to verify the jewelry's details.
Gold purity grades
In India, gold jewelry comes in various purity grades. This includes 14K (585), 18K (750), 20K (833), 22K (916), 23K (958), and 24K (995).
Information regarding hallmarked silver jewelry can also be verified using the BIS Care app. To do this, you need to enter the HUID number found on the silver jewelry into the app. The fixed purity grades for silver are 800, 835, 925, 958, 970, 990, and 999.
Exercise caution while purchasing.
When buying gold or silver, do not focus solely on the price and design. Make sure to check for the hallmark and HUID number on the jewelry. Subsequently, verify the details by entering the HUID into the BIS Care app. This ensures greater confidence regarding purity during the purchase and helps avoid financial loss resulting from incorrect information.
