Shopkeeper Complaint: If a shopkeeper charges more than the fixed MRP for a product, the customer can file a complaint. Learn how to file a complaint.

In India, an MRP (Maximum Retail Price) is fixed for every product sold, which is the maximum price at which an item can be sold. A shopkeeper can sell at a price lower than the MRP, but charging even a single penny more than the MRP is illegal.

Often, shopkeepers sell items like water bottles, chips, cold drinks, or snacks at movie theaters at prices higher than the MRP. People often ignore this, considering it a small amount. However, this is a direct violation of consumer rights.

If a shopkeeper is charging more than the MRP, the customer should first ask for a bill. The bill will show the price charged. A complaint can be filed based on this bill. Filing a complaint without a bill can be difficult. Therefore, always keep proof of your purchase.

The easiest way to file a complaint is to call the consumer helpline number 1915. This is the national consumer helpline where you can provide complete details about the shopkeeper selling goods at a price higher than the MRP. After the complaint is registered, officials investigate, and action can be taken against the offending shopkeeper.

You can also file a complaint through the Consumer Helpline mobile app. The app has an option to upload photos of the product, the bill, and the shopkeeper's name. After the complaint is registered, you will receive a tracking ID, which you can use to check the status.

If you shop online and find products being sold at a price higher than the MRP, you can also report it to the e-commerce website. The Ministry of Consumer Affairs has instructed all online companies to take immediate action in such cases.

For violating MRP regulations, a shopkeeper can be fined or their license can be canceled. So, next time a shopkeeper asks for more money than the fixed price, don't stay silent; file a complaint. Because if you complain, others will be saved from paying extra.
