Barrier-Free Toll Penalty Rules: The barrier-free tolling system is expanding rapidly across the country, and the tolling infrastructure is being made even more convenient than before for the benefit of the public. Currently, this system has been implemented at the Mundka-Bakkarwala toll plaza in Delhi and the Chaurasi toll plaza in Gujarat. With the help of the MLFF—or Multi-Lane Free Flow—tolling system, tolls can be collected without vehicles having to come to a halt. However, vehicle drivers cannot evade this system, nor can they attempt to deceive it in any way. It is important to note that anyone attempting to bypass the MLFF system will be digitally penalized. Let's take a look at the rules governing this system...

What is the Barrier-Less Tolling System?
The MLFF system facilitates uninterrupted toll collection through FASTag-based Automatic Electronic Toll Collection. It eliminates the need for physical toll booths or barriers; instead, overhead cameras and sensors identify vehicles, read their FASTags, and automatically deduct the toll amount while the vehicle remains in motion. This system helps reduce traffic congestion and significantly cuts down on travel time.

When is an E-Notice Issued?
According to the NHAI (National Highways Authority of India), an e-notice is issued when a vehicle passes through an MLFF toll point, but the toll payment via FASTag is missed, fails, or the system is unable to identify the vehicle. In such instances, the system records the vehicle's passage and issues an e-notice linked to the vehicle's registration number. This notice is sent electronically and provides the vehicle owner with an opportunity to pay the outstanding toll amount—without incurring any penalties—within a specified timeframe.

When is a Double Penalty Applicable?
According to the NHAI, vehicle drivers must pay the outstanding toll amount within 72 hours of the e-notice being issued. If the payment is made within this 72-hour window, no penalty will be levied. However, if the toll payment is made after the 72 hours has elapsed, a penalty amounting to double the original toll fee will be applicable.

How to Check an E-Notice?

To check whether an e-notice has been issued against your vehicle, you must visit the official NIC portal at https://nhfeenotice.parivahan.gov.in. Next, log in using your vehicle registration number and verify your identity using the OTP sent to your registered mobile number. If any e-notice appears thereafter, make the payment immediately.

**Your Vehicle Could Be Blacklisted**
If you repeatedly attempt to evade the toll system, your vehicle may be blacklisted or flagged. Therefore, ensure that you do not attempt to deceive the toll system—even inadvertently—and make it a point to check for and clear any pending e-notices in a timely manner.
