Wi-Fi Router: Most advanced Wi-Fi routers are designed to operate continuously for long periods.

Wi-Fi Router: Nowadays, the internet has become as essential as smartphones. Most people use Wi-Fi at home to get high-speed internet. Additionally, Wi-Fi is commonly used in offices, malls, and public places. However, it is often suggested that one should turn off the Wi-Fi at night before sleeping. But does this really save electricity, or does it shorten the router's lifespan? Let’s find out the truth.

Does frequently turning off the router damage it?

Most advanced Wi-Fi routers are designed to run continuously for extended periods. Keeping the router on day and night is normal, and it does not affect its lifespan.

However, if you frequently switch the router on and off throughout the day, it could impact the power circuits and electronic components. Repeated power cycling can place extra stress on the device.

Does turning off the Wi-Fi router save electricity?

For your information, Wi-Fi routers do not consume a significant amount of electricity. Typically, a standard router uses between 5 and 15 watts of power. Turning it off for 7–8 hours every night could result in some electricity savings.

However, these savings are not substantial enough to make a noticeable difference in your electricity bill; you might save only a few rupees a month. Therefore, turning off the router solely to save electricity is not particularly practical.

Should you turn off the router at night?

It is worth noting that if your router is placed in an area prone to high heat, turning it off occasionally to let it cool down can be beneficial. This can help reduce the risk of overheating. Additionally, if you are going to be away from home for several days, turning off the router can be a good option; this saves electricity and keeps the device safe. However, turning off the router for just 7–8 hours every night does not yield any significant benefit.
