Do you really not have to pay the toll if the wait exceeds 10 seconds? NHAI itself explains the actual rule..
A particular rule regarding national highways has frequently made headlines. It is often claimed that if a motorist has to wait for more than 10 seconds at a toll plaza, they are exempt from paying the toll—meaning you could simply drive on without paying if the wait exceeds 10 seconds. But does such a rule actually exist? The National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) has clarified this matter. Let’s find out the details:
What does the NHAI say?
The NHAI recently shared a post on its official social media platform, X (formerly Twitter). The post stated that the claim regarding toll exemption after a wait of more than 10 seconds is completely false.
According to the NHAI, toll collection at all national highway toll plazas across the country is governed by the National Highways Fee Rules, 2008. These rules specify which individuals and vehicles are eligible for toll exemptions. Nowhere in the National Highways Fee Rules, 2008, is there a provision allowing a vehicle to pass without paying the toll simply because the wait time exceeded 10 seconds; even if a queue forms at the toll plaza for some reason, the toll will not be waived on that basis alone.
Furthermore, information regarding vehicles exempted from toll charges is clearly displayed at toll plazas to ensure commuters are well-informed.
Do not rely on rumors.
The NHAI has urged the public not to accept every piece of information circulating on social media as true. If you need information regarding toll rules, please refer to the official regulations or the list displayed at the toll plaza. Arguing with toll staff or attempting to drive away without paying based on incorrect information can lead to trouble.
Get accurate information before traveling.
If you regularly travel on national highways, it is essential to be well-informed about toll-related rules. This will save you time and prevent any disputes. Through its post, the NHAI has clearly conveyed that the claim about toll exemption after a 10-second wait is merely a rumor. Therefore, make sure to check official information before trusting any such message or viral post.
