Smart Electricity Meter Technology: The system of smart prepaid electricity meters has been discontinued in Uttar Pradesh. Smart meters allow for real-time monitoring of electricity consumption.

Smart Electricity Meter Technology: The Uttar Pradesh government has provided significant relief to electricity consumers. The state government has abolished the smart prepaid meter system. For consumers who currently have prepaid smart meters installed in their homes, these meters will now function in a postpaid mode. In fact, there has been ongoing opposition regarding smart meters for quite some time. Acting upon public complaints, the smart prepaid meter system has now been scrapped. People had complained that smart meters run faster—that is, they record consumption at a higher rate—than normal meters. Today, we will explain the technology on which smart meters operate and address the question of whether they actually run faster than standard meters.

Do Smart Meters Run Fast?

Regarding smart meters, people had complained that they run faster than normal meters. In response, the electricity department issued a clarification stating that this information is incorrect. Smart meters function in exactly the same manner as normal meters. Department officials asserted that the claim regarding smart meters running fast is false. These meters contain a SIM card that transmits data directly to the central system. This eliminates the possibility of any human error occurring during the process. Trials were also conducted on a selection of meters to verify this. Officials further noted that the installation of smart meters allows consumers to view their electricity readings themselves.

How Many Smart Meters Are There in Uttar Pradesh?

According to media reports, Uttar Pradesh has 35 million (3.5 crore) electricity consumers, and smart meters have been installed at the premises of 8.7 million (87 lakh) of these consumers. Amidst the complaints, the government has now halted the ongoing installation of smart meters. The Central Government has also clarified that the installation of smart meters is not mandatory.

What Technology Do Smart Meters Use?

Smart electricity meters operate on highly advanced technology. They are capable of recording energy consumption in real-time, and this information is transmitted directly to both the consumer and the electricity department. These meters utilize radio frequency or cellular networks to perform functions such as data transmission and accurate billing. These devices record energy usage every 15 minutes or every hour. This allows users to monitor, via an app, exactly how much electricity is being consumed through their meter. Smart meters also help in curbing electricity theft.
