DL Renew: How long after a driving licence expires can it be renewed, and when is a fine applicable?
A driving licence is an important legal document. Driving with an expired licence is illegal and can result in a fine (challan). Many people overlook the expiry date of their driving licence. You can apply for a renewal before your licence expires. Under the Motor Vehicles Act, clear rules and timelines apply to renewing or re-obtaining a driving licence after its validity has lapsed.
**Renewal without late fees**
According to the Motor Vehicles Act, if your driving licence has expired, you are granted a 'grace period' of 30 days from the date of expiry. If you renew your licence within this one-month window, you are not required to pay any additional penalty or late fees.
**Renewal within one year (with late fees)**
If you are unable to renew your licence within the 30-day grace period, there is no need to panic. You can still renew it at any time within one year of the expiry date. However, in this case, you will be required to pay a late fee in addition to the standard renewal fee. The advantage is that if you renew within this one year, you do not need to take a driving test again.
**Stricter rules and re-testing after one year**
If more than one year has passed since your driving licence expired, the rules become much stricter. A licence cannot be renewed directly after one year. In such cases, the applicant must undergo a driving test again, in accordance with the regulations of the Transport Department (RTO). Your driving licence will be renewed only after you pass this test.
Which knife is best suited for which vegetable? To avoid heavy fines and the need to retake a test, you should renew your license in a timely manner. You can apply online—anywhere from one year before your license expires to one year after its expiry—by visiting the official 'Parivahan Sewa' (Transport Service) website of the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways.
