American billionaire Elon Musk's company Starlink has introduced a technology called Direct-to-Sale. This technology requires neither a SIM card nor a mobile tower to send text and voice messages and use the Internet from a mobile. In simple words, a Direct-to-Sale (DTC) technology satellite is a communication system that allows smartphones to be connected directly to satellites, allowing users to make calls, text, and use the Internet without any traditional mobile tower.
Direct-to-sale technology will neither require a special mobile handset nor will it require special hardware or software to be installed in the mobile phone. That is, the mobile you have will be able to connect to the satellite. The satellites used for this technology have special eNodeB modems, which act like mobile phone towers, but they are in space. These satellites send signals directly to smartphones, giving users connectivity even in remote areas.
When was DTC launched?
The first set of Starlink's direct-to-sale service was launched on January 2, 2024. Currently, only text has been sent through it. This service will be fully activated in 2025 for texting and calling as well as data services. SpaceX is deploying Starlink satellites with direct-to-sale capability on a large scale in space. Direct-to-Sale satellites will be launched initially on SpaceX's Falcon 9 rocket and then on Starship. Satellites in orbit will immediately connect to the Starlink constellation via laser backhaul to provide global connectivity.
Partnership with several telecom operators
Elon Musk's company Starlink has partnered with telecom operators in many countries of the world to implement direct-to-sale technology so that users can get satellite connectivity along with existing mobile networks. Starlink has tied up with T-Mobile (USA), Optus (Australia), Rogers (Canada), One NZ (New Zealand), KDDI (Japan), Salt (Switzerland), Entel (Chile) and Entel (Peru).
