Tips to stay safe from digital payment fraud: Digital payment has revolutionized our transactions. UPI and mobile wallets have gotten rid of the hassle of cash. Just one click and the payment is done. It is very fast, convenient, and very easy. But the question is, is it completely safe? Regarding this, the National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI) has given 5 important tips to keep digital transactions (digital payment fraud) safe. With this, you can avoid fraud from happening every day.
1. Verify before payment
If you are going to make a payment to a person, then verify them first. That is, check his name and details thoroughly before payment, so that fraudsters can be avoided.
2. Use trusted apps and websites
Always transact only from trusted and official payment apps or websites. Avoid downloading suspicious links or apps. Fraudsters can ask for false information by posing as fake government, police, or bank officials.
3. Never share passwords
Do not tell your UPI PIN, OTP, or bank password to anyone. No real bank or government official asks you for this information.
4. Keep SMS and notifications on
Keep SMS and app notifications on for every transaction. If you are under pressure from any payment request, do not pay immediately. First, confirm it, then make the payment.
5. Do not make payments in a hurry
Fraudsters often put pressure on you to make quick decisions. So, do not make payments in a hurry. Think and understand first, then make the transaction.
Every day, 800 people are becoming victims of fraud worth lakhs of rupees
According to the data released in the year 2024, a record 208.5 billion digital payments were made in a year. That is, 571 million transactions took place in a day. According to RBI data, 29,082 cases of digital payment and card fraud worth more than Rs 1 lakh were registered in the financial year 2023-24. If frauds of less than Rs 1 lakh are also included, then this number can be more than 2 lakh 90 thousand. These are the cases which are reported. According to this, an average of 800 people fall victim to fraud every day.
