Digital Arrest Fraud
Digital Arrest Fraud: The central government has taken major action to stop online fraud and blocked more than 17,000 WhatsApp accounts. According to the Home Ministry, these accounts were being used for cyber crime and digital arrest and these accounts were mainly linked to countries like Cambodia, Myanmar, Laos and Thailand. They were being used to cheat people in India. More than 92,000 cases of digital arrest have been registered from January to October this year. This action was taken by the Cyber Crime Coordination Center of the Ministry of Home Affairs, which was based on complaints made on online platforms.
New method of cyber fraud
In the last few months, fraud worth crores of rupees has taken place due to digital arrest. The Cyber Fraud Coordination Center (I4C) of the Ministry of Home Affairs directed this action based on complaints received on the cyber crime portal. I4C asked Meta's microblogging platform WhatsApp to take action against these accounts. This new method of cyber fraud is to commit fraud by scammers by scaring people by posing as big officials like CBI, ED, Income Tax Officer and using social engineering. Due to this, people transfer money to the scammers' account due to fear of defamation.
