Didn't get a bedsheet and blanket in the train's AC coach? Here’s how to get a refund and what the railway rules say..
Indian Railways Bedroll Rules: Millions of passengers travel via Indian Railways daily. To make their journeys comfortable and convenient, the Railways periodically establishes various rules and amenities. One such amenity is the bedroll provided in AC coaches, which includes a bedsheet, pillow, blanket, and towel.
Often, passengers complain that despite holding a confirmed AC ticket, they were not provided with a bedroll by the coach attendant. If you ever face such a situation, it is crucial to be aware of your rights and the railway's regulations.
Which coaches offer the bedroll facility?
According to railway rules, the cost of the bedroll is included in the fare for all AC classes—1st AC, 2nd AC, and 3rd AC. However, in trains like the Garib Rath, the bedroll is optional; if you choose to avail of it while booking your ticket, a nominal fee is charged. Bedrolls are not provided in the standard Sleeper Class; however, on certain special trains, you can request one by paying an additional fee during online ticket booking.
Demand the bedroll immediately if not provided
If you are traveling in an AC 1st, 2nd, or 3rd class coach and do not find a bedroll at your seat, first speak directly to the coach attendant, show them your ticket, and ask for the bedroll. If the attendant refuses to provide the bedsheet and blanket or claims the stock is exhausted, lodge a complaint with the TTE (Travelling Ticket Examiner) immediately. Additionally, you can register your complaint instantly via the RailMadad mobile app or by calling 139.
Step-by-step process to claim a refund
If a bedroll is not provided during the journey due to technical or operational reasons, you are entitled to a refund under railway rules. To claim the refund, you must follow the process outlined below. The most important condition for obtaining a refund is to ensure you get a 'Non-Supply of Bedroll Certificate' issued by the train's TTE or conductor. You must register your claim for this refund within 20 hours of the train's arrival at its destination station. Subsequently, submit your original travel ticket and the certificate regarding the non-supply of the bedroll at the refund counter to collect the refund.
