Credit Card Replacement: Payment failures can occur if the credit card's chip or magnetic strip is damaged, or if the card itself breaks. In such situations, instead of persisting with the faulty card, it is best to get it replaced by the bank.

Credit Card News: Nowadays, making purchases and paying bills with a credit card has become very convenient. However, it can be troublesome if your card suddenly fails to swipe, online payments start failing, or card machines stop reading it. Such issues often arise due to reasons like a malfunctioning chip, a worn-out magnetic strip, or a broken card.

If you face this issue, do not keep trying to use the old card; instead, get it replaced by the bank. The good news is that most banks offer replacement services from the comfort of your home via mobile apps, internet banking, or customer care. Let’s find out more...

What causes a credit card to stop working?

There can be several reasons for a credit card to malfunction. Sometimes the chip gets damaged, or scratches on the magnetic strip prevent the machine from reading it. Other issues include the card bending, breaking, or the contactless payment feature failing.
If the EMV chip is damaged, the card cannot be read by the machine.
Frequent use can cause scratches on the magnetic strip, leading to problems with swipe payments.
Bending, breaking, or peeling of the lamination can also cause the card to stop working.
Sometimes, the NFC or 'Tap and Pay' feature may also stop functioning.

How to get your credit card replaced from home

First, immediately block the faulty card using your bank's mobile app, net banking, or customer care service. Clearly inform the bank that your card is not lost but is malfunctioning due to damage or a technical issue.
Go to the 'Card Management' or 'Service Request' section in the mobile app or net banking portal and select the option for card replacement or re-issuance.
Before submitting the request, check for any applicable replacement fees and verify the registered address on file.
Once the request is submitted, the bank typically provides a reference or service request number via SMS or email.
You can track the delivery status of your new card using the tracking facility provided by the bank.

How to make payments until the new card arrives?

If there is a delay in receiving the replacement card, you can use the digital payment options provided by the bank during the interim period.
If the bank offers the facility, you can use a virtual credit card via the mobile app.
You can make certain UPI payments by linking your RuPay credit card to a UPI app.
For essential bills and payments, you can use net banking or the auto-pay facility linked to your bank account.
Meanwhile, avoid attempting repeated transactions with the old, damaged card until you receive the new one.
