Delhi's Anganwadi Centers to Shift to MCD Schools: Government Announces

Preparations have begun to relocate Delhi's Anganwadi centers to Municipal Corporation schools. By securing space within MCD school premises, the children will be able to benefit from the facilities already available there.

Preparations are underway to shift Anganwadi centers—currently operating in rented buildings—to Municipal Corporation schools. Chief Minister Rekha Gupta stated that the government has initiated the process. Relocating these centers to MCD school premises will allow children to access existing amenities such as toilets, parks, and play areas. The government is also working on a plan to upgrade these centers into better, permanent buildings over the next two years.

CM Rekha Gupta shared this information while honoring Anganwadi workers at events organized under the 'Seva Sankalp Abhiyan' (Service Pledge Campaign). There are approximately 10,870 Anganwadi centers in Delhi, while the Delhi Government's Economic Survey 2025-26 indicates the operation of over 10,750 centers.

Rekha Gupta stated that the government is addressing concerns raised by workers regarding centers operating in rented spaces. Consequently, such centers will be relocated to MCD school premises. According to the government, children attending these centers within school premises will gain access to facilities like toilets, parks, and play areas. There is also a plan to provide Anganwadi workers with better workplaces compared to their current conditions. The government aims to upgrade these centers into improved, permanent buildings within the next two years.

The Chief Minister also spoke about increasing the honorarium for Anganwadi workers. However, it has not yet been clarified by how much the honorarium will be raised or when the hike will come into effect. Rekha Gupta assured that the government would seriously consider the issues faced by Anganwadi workers who have been working at the grassroots level for a long time and would strive to improve their working environment. Under the 'Seva Sankalp Abhiyan' (Service Pledge Campaign), felicitation events for Anganwadi workers and helpers will be organized across all Assembly constituencies in Delhi. The objective of this campaign is not merely to deliver government schemes to beneficiaries but also to engage in direct dialogue with the grassroots workforce.

Highlighting the role of Anganwadi workers, the Chief Minister noted that, in addition to tasks related to child care and nutrition, they play a crucial role in reaching out to pregnant women, conducting surveys, supporting vaccination drives, compiling data, and ensuring that the benefits of government schemes reach needy families.

Staff associated with crèches will also be included in the government's felicitation campaign. Through this initiative, the government aims to understand the challenges faced by grassroots workers and their suggestions, and to implement necessary improvements based on this feedback.
