Delhi Red Fort: Red Fort to remain closed until August 15; check this important update before planning a visit..
If you are planning to visit the Red Fort in Delhi these days, here is an important update for you. To ensure your trip isn't wasted, make sure to check whether the fort is open or closed before you go. Due to grand preparations for the Independence Day celebrations, the Red Fort has been closed to the general public starting July 15, 2026. You will not be able to visit the interior of the Red Fort until August 15.
It is worth noting that every year on August 15, the Prime Minister hoists the tricolor from the ramparts of the Red Fort and addresses the nation. Security arrangements begin well in advance each year to prepare for this ceremony. Similarly, in view of the Independence Day preparations this year, the Red Fort has been closed to the public from July 15 to August 15.
The Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) has issued an order regarding this. During this period, the entire complex will be under the control of security agencies to ensure all preparations are completed on time.
What preparations will take place during this time?
Security arrangements at the Red Fort will be strengthened between July 15 and August 15. Barricades will be installed, a stage will be set up, security checks will be conducted, and necessary technical arrangements will be made. For this reason, no tourists will be allowed inside during this period.
The rule applies to all tourists—domestic and foreign
This restriction is not limited to Indian tourists alone. Tourists from both within the country and abroad will be unable to enter the Red Fort until August 15. The Red Fort will reopen to the general public only after the Independence Day celebrations conclude.
This is not the first time this has happened. Last year, in 2025, the Red Fort was also kept closed from July 15 to August 15 to facilitate Independence Day preparations. Prior to that, in 2021, the fort remained closed from July 21 to August 15. In 2018, however, public entry was restricted only from August 8 to August 15. In essence, the Red Fort is closed for a certain period every year to meet security requirements.
When is the Red Fort open on regular days?
Typically, the Red Fort is open to tourists from Tuesday to Sunday, between 9:30 AM and 4:30 PM. It remains closed on Mondays. However, this schedule will not apply from July 15 to August 15, as the Red Fort will remain closed to the general public throughout this period.
Why are security agencies on alert?
Recently, the Mumbai Police received a phone call threatening to blow up the Red Fort with a bomb. This information was immediately relayed to the Delhi Police. Although the call turned out to be a hoax upon investigation, security agencies remain fully vigilant. Given the significance of a major national event like Independence Day, no negligence is being permitted.
What should you do if you are planning to visit the Red Fort?
If you have planned a visit to the Red Fort between July 15 and August 15, please postpone your trip for now. The Red Fort will reopen to tourists only after the Independence Day celebrations conclude; no entry will be permitted prior to that.
