Delhi Ration Card Update 2026: 7.71 Lakh New Openings Announced, Online Applications Begin Soon
The Delhi government has announced a major overhaul of the ration card system, creating more than 7.71 lakh fresh opportunities for eligible residents to apply for new ration cards. The move comes after a large-scale audit conducted by the administration, which led to the cancellation of lakhs of inactive, duplicate, and ineligible ration cards across the national capital.
Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta said the government is now preparing to issue new ration cards after nearly 13 years, giving lakhs of needy families a chance to access subsidized food grains and welfare benefits under the National Food Security (NFS) scheme.
Delhi Government Cancels Over 7 Lakh Invalid Ration Cards
According to the government, a detailed verification process revealed several irregularities in the existing ration card database. During the audit, authorities identified beneficiaries who no longer met income eligibility conditions, duplicate card holders, inactive beneficiaries, and even names of deceased individuals that were still listed in records.
The Chief Minister stated that:
- Around 1.44 lakh beneficiaries were removed because their income exceeded the eligibility limit.
- More than 35,800 people had not collected ration for over a year.
- Nearly 29,580 beneficiaries were found to be deceased.
- Over 23,000 duplicate ration cards were detected and cancelled.
After removing these entries, the government confirmed that over 7.71 lakh new ration card slots have become available for deserving applicants.
Income Limit Likely to Be Increased
The Delhi government has also proposed a major revision in the income eligibility criteria for ration card applicants. At present, families earning up to ₹1.2 lakh annually are eligible to apply under the scheme.
However, the government now plans to raise the annual income limit to ₹2.5 lakh, which could allow a significantly larger number of low-income families to qualify for benefits. The proposal is expected to receive approval during the upcoming cabinet meeting.
Officials say the decision aims to expand welfare coverage and provide relief to economically weaker sections struggling with rising living costs.
Who Can Apply for an NFS Ration Card?
Under the National Food Security Act (NFSA) 2013, several categories of residents are eligible to apply for NFS ration cards in Delhi.
The eligible groups include:
- Residents living in slum clusters
- Families residing in F, G, and H category resettlement colonies
- People living in notified rural villages
- Homeless individuals
- Members of the transgender community
- Families with differently-abled members
- Single women, including widows, abandoned women, divorced women, and unmarried women managing households
- Unprotected children
- Economically weaker occupational groups such as rag-pickers, daily wage labourers, domestic workers, construction workers, porters, cycle-rickshaw drivers, and workers in small household industries.
Who Can Become Head of Family (HoF)?
As per the guidelines, the eldest woman in the family aged 18 years or above will be considered the Head of Family (HoF) for the ration card.
If no adult female member is available in the household, the eldest male member can be designated as the HoF.

Big Relief for Delhi’s Poor and Middle-Class Families
The reopening of ration card applications after more than a decade is being viewed as a major welfare initiative by the Delhi government. With food prices and household expenses continuing to rise, access to subsidized ration could provide substantial financial support to lakhs of low-income families.
The government's decision to clean up the existing database before issuing new cards is also being seen as an attempt to improve transparency and ensure that benefits reach genuinely eligible beneficiaries.
Residents who meet the eligibility criteria are now expected to closely watch the official notification and application rollout in the coming days.
