Delhi Metro: Get Delhi Metro tickets directly on WhatsApp and avoid long queues—here’s the process.
Delhi Metro: Preparations are underway to make the Delhi Metro fully digital through technology. Find out how the new WhatsApp QR ticketing system works; it promises relief from standing in long queues.
Delhi Metro Ticket on WhatsApp: Delhi Metro has launched a new digital system to make commuting easier for passengers. The DMRC has installed self-service kiosks at select metro stations in the capital, allowing passengers to receive QR tickets on their mobile phones within minutes. Notably, the ticket is sent directly to WhatsApp, virtually eliminating the need for paper tickets.
New digital ticketing initiative launched at metro stations
The Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) has currently launched this facility as a pilot project. In the initial phase, self-service mobile ticketing kiosks have been installed at 12 major stations. Using these machines, passengers can book tickets themselves without visiting a ticket counter and receive a digital QR code on their WhatsApp number.
The DMRC states that if passenger feedback is positive, the facility could be expanded across the entire network in the future.
Why was a new system needed when several options already exist?
Currently, Delhi Metro offers ticketing options via Smart Cards, the National Common Mobility Card (NCMC), the Delhi Metro Sarthi App, the DMRC WhatsApp chatbot (9650855800), the One Delhi App, and platforms like IRCTC.
Despite this, a large number of passengers still purchase paper QR tickets at stations. This leads to overcrowding at ticket counters, and discarded tickets create cleanliness challenges at various locations. The new initiative aims to mitigate these issues.
At which stations have the new machines been installed?
The DMRC has launched this facility at the Mandi House, Barakhamba Road, ITO, Sir M. Visvesvaraya Moti Bagh, Bhikaji Cama Place, IIT, Delhi Aerocity, Airport Terminal-1, New Delhi, Shivaji Stadium, Airport Terminal-3, and Dwarka Sector-21 metro stations. These stations were selected based on passenger footfall and utility.
How to get a QR ticket via WhatsApp
Passengers simply need to visit the kiosk and select their destination station; the origin station is already registered in the system. Next, they must enter the number of tickets required and a mobile number linked to WhatsApp. Once the online payment is completed, the digital QR ticket is instantly sent to the WhatsApp number. This QR code can then be used for entry and exit during the journey.
Delhi Metro network spans over 300 stations
Today, the Delhi Metro is not limited to the capital alone; it connects various cities across the NCR through a network spanning approximately 416 kilometers. Operating across 12 different lines, the service serves passengers through more than 300 stations. The network has expanded to Noida, Ghaziabad, Gurugram, Faridabad, and Bahadurgarh, facilitating travel for lakhs of people every day.
The Delhi Metro is continuously working on constructing new corridors and additional stations. Alongside network expansion, emphasis is also being placed on technological upgrades to enhance the passenger experience.
The introduction of mobile ticketing kiosks is considered a significant step in this direction, potentially paving the way for a fully digital and more convenient metro travel experience in the future.
