Delhi: Major Change in Traffic System—Now, No Challan Will Be Issued Without OTP Verification
Traffic Police OTP Challan: To streamline the traffic management system in Delhi, the administration has implemented a significant new change. Now, no traffic challan (fine) will be issued without OTP verification. Read on to understand the full details.
Delhi Traffic Police OTP News: If you drive on the roads of Delhi, this news is of utmost importance to you. The Delhi Traffic Police has introduced a major modification to the challan issuance process; now, a simple OTP—or One-Time Password—received on your mobile phone will serve to safeguard both your finances and your driving record. Henceforth in Delhi, a challan for violating traffic rules will be issued only after you verify the OTP received on your mobile device with the police officer present at the scene.
In reality, whenever the Traffic Police in the national capital, Delhi, issues a challan, it frequently happens that an incorrect mobile number is entered into the system, or the notification regarding the fine is inadvertently delivered to a third party. To prevent such errors and discrepancies, the Delhi Traffic Police has now made OTP verification a mandatory requirement.
The new rule stipulates that if you jump a red light, engage in overspeeding, or violate any other traffic regulation, the traffic officer present at the spot will enter your mobile number into the system. An OTP will be sent immediately to your registered mobile number. Your challan will be generated only after you verbally provide that OTP to the officer and the system successfully validates it.
Why was this necessary?
According to official statistics, the Delhi Police issues approximately 20,000 traffic challans every day. A significant number of these challans were previously being delivered to individuals who had committed no traffic violation whatsoever, simply because an incorrect mobile number had been recorded in the system. The complaints arising from the use of fraudulent numbers and technical glitches within the system had become a major headache for the police force.
The most significant advantage of this new system is that the challan will now reach the correct individual—and *only* the correct individual—without fail. Furthermore, the mobile number you verify at the spot will be directly updated on the 'Vahan' portal. This means that if your vehicle records currently contain an outdated mobile number, it will be automatically updated through this process, ensuring that you receive all essential notifications and updates in a timely manner in the future.
What if you do not have a phone, or if your phone is switched off?
According to the police, the objective of this system is to make the process transparent. If, for any reason, the OTP verification cannot be completed, the challan issuance process may be halted, thereby eliminating the possibility of erroneous challans being issued. This is being hailed as a major upgrade aimed at making traffic management on the streets of Delhi even smoother and more impartial.
