Travel Allowance: The Delhi government has launched a new incentive scheme for employees who commute using the Metro and DTC buses. Employees will receive a 10% additional allowance for using the Common Mobility Card.

Delhi Travel Allowance Update: To promote public transport, the Delhi government has introduced a new incentive scheme for its employees. Under this scheme, employees who use the Common Mobility Card (CMC) for travel on the Delhi Metro and DTC buses will be granted an extra travel allowance incentive.

The government states that the aim of this move is to encourage people to use public transport, save fuel, and reduce pollution. Notably, this initiative comes at a time when concerns regarding fuel supplies have risen due to ongoing tensions in the Middle East.

Who will benefit?

According to an order from the Finance Department, employees of the Delhi government (GNCTD) can avail themselves of this scheme if they spend at least 25 percent of their monthly transport allowance (excluding dearness allowance) on purchasing or recharging the Common Mobility Card. Such employees will receive an extra incentive amounting to 10 percent of their prescribed transport allowance. This amount will be added to their salary each month.

What is the government's objective?

The government believes that if more employees use public transport services like the Metro and buses, reliance on private vehicles will decrease. This will lead to fuel savings and help reduce pollution in Delhi. This decision is part of the 90-day "Mera Bharat, Mera Yogdan" (My India, My Contribution) fuel-saving campaign launched by the government last month. Under this campaign, government employees were encouraged to work from home two days a week and use public transport wherever possible.

Special bus service for employees

The Delhi Transport Corporation (DTC) has also announced the launch of special bus services for the convenience of government employees. These buses will connect employee residential areas to nearby metro stations and the Delhi Secretariat, thereby easing their commute.

How can one get the Common Mobility Card?

According to the order, the DTC will issue Common Mobility Cards to employees. However, this will require the employees' consent, and they must adhere to the guidelines prescribed by the Finance Department and the DTC. The government has currently decided to implement this incentive scheme for a period of six months. Subsequently, the scheme's effectiveness will be reviewed, and its duration may be extended if necessary.
