Delhi E-Rickshaw Policy: If you are fed up with Delhi's traffic jams, there is good news in store for you. The Delhi government is preparing to introduce new regulations regarding e-rickshaws aimed at reducing congestion and traffic jams on the city's roads.

Delhi E-Rickshaw Policy: If you live in Delhi, you have undoubtedly witnessed the long queues of e-rickshaws outside metro stations and the resulting traffic jams they cause. This likely wastes a significant amount of your time. If you, too, are frustrated by the traffic congestion in Delhi, there is some relief on the way. The Delhi government is gearing up to implement major changes regarding e-rickshaws in an effort to alleviate traffic jams and enhance road safety. The draft of the new Delhi Electric Vehicle Policy 2.0 includes a proposal to cap the total number of e-rickshaws operating in the city.

According to the government, no more than 2.5 lakh e-rickshaws will be registered in Delhi henceforth. In many parts of the capital—particularly around metro stations, markets, and residential colonies—the sheer volume of e-rickshaws often leads to severe traffic congestion. Furthermore, unregistered e-rickshaws are also plying the roads, thereby heightening the risk of accidents.

How Many E-Rickshaws Are There in Delhi?

According to official statistics, there are currently approximately 2.05 lakh registered e-rickshaws in Delhi. However, officials estimate that another 2 lakh illegal e-rickshaws are also operating on the roads. This implies that the total number could exceed 4 lakhs. Moreover, over 44,000 new e-rickshaws were registered in 2025 alone.

What Will the New Rules Be?

Most importantly, the owner of an e-rickshaw must be the very same individual who operates it.
Additionally, only one e-rickshaw may be registered per driving license.
Please note that being a permanent resident of Delhi will be a mandatory requirement for registration.
Furthermore, all drivers will be required to obtain an E-Rickshaw Compliance Certificate (ECC). A special drive will be launched against illegal e-rickshaws that lack the necessary documentation and fail to meet safety standards.

Receive Cash for Scrapping Old E-Rickshaws

It is worth noting that the new policy includes provisions for incentives for e-rickshaw owners. If an individual owns an old e-rickshaw registered between January 1, 2015, and December 31, 2022, and chooses to scrap it, the government will provide an incentive of up to ₹35,000. Furthermore, a rebate of up to ₹15,000 will be offered to those who scrap their old 'Gramin Sewa' vehicles to purchase a new electric vehicle. Once approved by the Cabinet, this new policy will be implemented across the entire city of Delhi. The government anticipates that these measures will help reduce traffic congestion and improve overall order on the roads.
