DA Update: How much extra take-home salary will employees receive once the DA reaches 63%?
Central government employees are awaiting an increase in their Dearness Allowance (DA). According to experts, they might receive this benefit before Diwali. It is anticipated that the DA could be raised by 3%, which would lead to a significant increase in the salaries of government employees. Based on current projections, the Dearness Allowance could rise from 60% to 63%. With Diwali falling on November 8 this year, employees and pensioners are hopeful that an announcement might be made during this festive season.
The Union Cabinet, in its meeting on October 14, did not announce the pending revision for DA and Dearness Relief (DR), leaving the timing of the next decision uncertain. The additional amount received by employees will depend on their basic salary. A 3% increase would mean an extra ₹540 per month for an employee with a basic salary of ₹18,000, while an employee with a basic salary of ₹56,100 would receive an additional ₹1,683 per month (before deductions).
How much of a salary increase can employees expect?
DA is calculated as a percentage of the basic salary. Following a previous 2% hike approved by the central government—which took effect from January 1, 2026—the current rate stands at 60%. If the next revision raises the DA to 63%, employees will receive an additional 3% of their basic salary every month.
Basic Pay Current DA (60%) Expected DA (63%) Monthly Increase
₹18,000 ₹10,800 ₹11,340 ₹540
₹25,500 ₹15,300 ₹16,065 ₹765
₹35,400 ₹21,240 ₹22,302 ₹1,062
₹44,900 ₹26,940 ₹28,287 ₹1,347
₹56,100 ₹33,660 ₹35,343 ₹1,683
Source: These calculations are based on the existing DA rate of 60% and a projected rate of 63%. The proposed increase has not yet received official approval.
If this 3% increase remains in effect for an entire year, employees at these basic pay levels could receive an additional annual amount ranging from ₹6,480 to ₹20,196. However, the actual increase in take-home salary may be lower due to certain deductions.
How much in arrears could employees receive?
The DA revision for July 2026 is expected to be effective from July 1, even if the formal announcement is made at a later date. If the government approves the implementation of this increase retrospectively from that date, employees may also receive arrears for the intervening months, subject to the terms specified in the official order.
For example, if an employee has a basic pay of ₹35,400, a 3% increase would translate to an additional amount of ₹1,062 per month. Based on this calculation, the total arrears could amount to ₹3,186 for the months of July, August, and September, or ₹4,248 if calculated for the four months up to October.
These figures are provided for illustrative purposes only. The actual arrears received will depend on the effective date of implementation, the approved revised rate, and the number of months for which the payment is made.
The increase in Dearness Allowance (DA) is separate from the Diwali bonus.
The revision in DA is distinct from the festive bonus already announced by the government. The central government has approved a 30-day ad-hoc bonus for eligible Group C and non-gazetted Group B employees who are not covered under productivity-linked bonus schemes. Depending on eligibility criteria, this could result in a maximum payout of ₹6,908. Additionally, eligible railway employees will receive a 78-day productivity-linked bonus, with a maximum payout of up to ₹17,951.
Unlike these one-time payments, an increase in DA will lead to a rise in monthly salary. If implemented with retrospective effect, employees may also receive arrears. Pensioners will receive the benefit through 'Dearness Relief.'
The upcoming revision in DA is also separate from the 8th Pay Commission. The existing DA framework is likely to continue while the Pay Commission works on its recommendations. Employees should not assume that an increase in DA automatically implies an immediate, comprehensive change to the entire pay structure.
At present, a 3 percent increase in DA is merely an expectation, not a guaranteed festive payout. Employees will need to wait for the Cabinet's decision and the subsequent official order to ascertain the revised rate, the effective date of implementation, and the exact amount of arrears to be received.
