An increase in the AICPI-IW figures for July 2026 suggests a likely hike in the Dearness Allowance (DA) for central government employees and the Dearness Relief (DR) for pensioners. However, the final decision rests on the Central Government's approval.

If you are a central government employee or a pensioner, this information is relevant to you. A significant update regarding the Dearness Allowance has recently emerged. The AICPI-IW index for July 2026 has been released, showing a rise of 1.3 points compared to the previous month. Given these figures, employees are now anticipating the next DA revision. It is expected that the government might announce a hike in the Dearness Allowance before the festive season.

According to Labour Bureau data, the AICPI-IW index rose by 1.3 points to reach 153.2 in July 2026. Meanwhile, the annual retail inflation rate stood at 4.57% in July 2026, up from 2.66% in July 2025. Consequently, employees are keeping a close watch on the potential hike in the Dearness Allowance.

What is the AICPI-IW Index?

The AICPI-IW (All India Consumer Price Index for Industrial Workers) is released monthly. It tracks price fluctuations in goods and services used daily by industrial workers. Notably, the index has shown a consistent upward trend during the early months of this year as well.

In March 2026, the AICPI-IW stood at 149.1.
In April 2026, it rose to 149.9.
In May, the index reached 150.8.
In June, it stood at 151.9. The index stood at 153.2 in July 2026.

This figure is compiled based on retail prices collected from 317 markets across 88 major industrial centers in the country.

Why is this index important for employees?

Central government employees closely monitor fluctuations in the AICPI-IW because it impacts their Dearness Allowance (DA) and the Dearness Relief (DR) for pensioners. Under the 7th Pay Commission, revisions to the DA are based on the 12-month average of the AICPI-IW and are carried out twice a year. These announcements typically take place around March and October.

By how much might the Dearness Allowance (DA) increase?

Based on recent AICPI-IW data, employees are expecting a DA hike of approximately 3% to 4% this time. However, this is merely an estimate; the actual increase will be determined following the release of further AICPI-IW data and the central government's final approval.
