The 'Confederation of Central Government Employees and Workers' has written to the Department of Expenditure under the Ministry of Finance, urging an early announcement regarding the Dearness Allowance (DA) and Dearness Relief (DR) installment applicable from July 2026.

Additionally, considering the financial requirements during the festive season, employee organizations have demanded the immediate release of an ad-hoc bonus of up to ₹21,000 before Dussehra.

In the letter sent to the Ministry of Finance on September 24, 2026, the employee organization clarified that this is not a demand for an advance or an additional benefit. The organization argues that since the relevant data and the formula for the Consumer Price Index (CPI-IW) are available, the formal process should be completed promptly. This would ensure that the benefits due from July 2026 are reflected in employees' monthly salaries without delay and that arrears are paid in accordance with the rules.

The letter notes that employees are facing increased financial commitments due to children's education, household expenses, and the festive season; therefore, a timely announcement would provide significant relief.

How much could the DA increase this time?

The primary objective of the Dearness Allowance—which is revised twice a year, in January and July—is to provide relief to employees against rising inflation.

July AICPI-IW Figure: The All India Consumer Price Index for Industrial Workers (AICPI-IW) figure for July 2026 stood at 153.2 points. Potential Hike: Based on this data, it is estimated that the Dearness Allowance (DA) could see a 4% increase this time, raising it from the current 60% to 64%.

Past Record: In July 2023, the DA stood at 46%; it was subsequently raised by 2%—from 58% to 60%—in January 2026 (with the official announcement made on April 18, 2026).

Demand for Diwali Bonus and Early Salary Disbursement (up to ₹21,000)

The 'Staff Side NC-JCM' and the 'All India NPS Employees Federation' have urged the government to make a quick decision regarding the bonus and DA in view of the festive season. These employee bodies have requested the government to release a revised bonus of up to ₹21,000 for central government employees before Dussehra/Diwali.

Manjeet Singh Patel, President of the All India NPS Employees Federation, stated that the government often disburses salaries keeping local requirements in mind. For instance, salaries are paid early during Onam in Kerala, and recently, salaries and pensions were released on September 25 due to the bank strike (September 26–28).

According to Manjeet Singh Patel, the central government typically announces the July DA revision by the end of September, and the increased DA along with arrears for the preceding months is credited with the employees' October salary.
