DA Hike: A Diwali Gift for Central Government Employees? Find Out How Much Their Salaries Might Increase
Central government employees and pensioners are awaiting an increase in their Dearness Allowance (DA) and Dearness Relief (DR), effective from July 2026. Several media reports suggest that the DA hike could be announced before Diwali. Here is the latest update and information on when the announcement might be made.
Central government employees and pensioners are keeping a close watch on the upcoming hike in their Dearness Allowance (DA) and Dearness Relief (DR) for July 2026. With Diwali falling on November 8 this year, employees are hopeful that the government might announce an increase in the DA before the festival.
DA and DR are Revised Twice a Year
The central government typically revises the Dearness Allowance for employees and Dearness Relief for pensioners twice a year—once effective from January and the second time from July. An announcement regarding the revision, applicable from July 2026, is currently awaited.
An increase in DA leads to a rise in the monthly salaries of central government employees, while an increase in DR provides relief to pensioners by boosting their pension amounts.
How Much Could the Dearness Allowance Increase?
According to estimates, the DA and DR could see an increase of 3% in the July 2026 revision. If the government approves this hike, the Dearness Allowance would rise from the current 60% to 63%. However, this is merely an estimate, as the final decision rests with the government. For example, if an employee's basic salary is Rs 18,000 and the Dearness Allowance (DA) increases from 60% to 63%, the calculation would be as follows:
Current DA (60%): Rs 10,800 per month
Increased DA (63%): Rs 11,340 per month
Additional amount per month: Rs 540
When will the Dearness Allowance be announced?
If the hike is made effective from July and the payment is disbursed along with the October salary, the arrears for the four-month period (July to October) would amount to Rs 2,160. This calculation is based on a basic salary of Rs 18,000 and a 3% increase. However, the government has not yet announced an official date for the declaration. Therefore, it cannot be stated with certainty that the DA hike will be announced before Diwali. On previous occasions, decisions regarding the Dearness Allowance have sometimes been announced after the festive season.
