There is significant news for central government employees and pensioners during this festive season. The long wait for millions of employees—who have been anticipating an increase in their Dearness Allowance (DA) and Dearness Relief (DR), effective from July 1—may soon come to an end. All eyes are now on the weekly Union Cabinet meeting scheduled for Wednesday, October 21, 2026. Experts believe that since the announcement of the DA hike has already been considerably delayed, the government might offer a major gift to its employees during tomorrow's meeting.

What do employee organizations say?
Dr. Manjeet Singh Patel, National President of the All India NPS Employees Federation, stated that the announcement of the DA has been delayed significantly; therefore, there is a strong expectation that it could be approved during the upcoming Cabinet meeting this Wednesday.

Similarly, C. Sreekumar, Secretary of the All India Defence Employees Federation, also believes that an official announcement regarding the DA hike now appears certain following Wednesday's meeting.

The frustration and concern among central government employees and pensioners had been steadily mounting. This prompted the Confederation of Central Government Employees and Workers to stage a strong protest at their workplaces during the lunch hour on October 16.

In a letter addressed to the Cabinet Secretary regarding this matter, a demand was made for the immediate announcement of the DA/DR and bonuses, effective from July 1. Although the government recently announced the Performance-Linked Bonus (PLB) and non-PLB bonuses for railway employees, the decision regarding the DA had been deferred.

By how much might the Dearness Allowance increase?
Currently, central government employees are receiving a Dearness Allowance at a rate of 60%. According to the rules, the Dearness Allowance (DA) is calculated based on the average retail inflation figures over the preceding 12 months.

Based on the current average figures, it is estimated that there could be a 3% hike in the DA, raising it from 60% to 63%. However, this will only be confirmed following an official announcement by the government.

So, how much will the salary increase?
Even a marginal increase in the Dearness Allowance leads to a significant rise in an employee's take-home salary. For instance, if an employee at 'Level-7'—with a basic salary of ₹44,900—currently receives a gross salary of ₹71,840 (based on a 60% DA), an increase in the DA by 3% (to 63%) would raise their gross salary to ₹73,187.

In other words, this could result in a direct monthly gain of ₹1,347. All eyes are now on tomorrow's meeting to see when and by how much the government decides to increase the DA for its employees.
