Cyber fraud is happening even without OTP and link! Fraudsters have found this new way, and know the ways to avoid it.

Now cyber criminals have become so clever that they neither ask for OTP, send any message nor make you click on any link, yet they quietly blow away lakhs of rupees from your bank account.
Now cyber criminals have become so clever and expert in technology that they neither ask for OTP, nor send any message nor make you click on any link, yet they quietly blow away lakhs of rupees from your bank account. In Prayagraj, many such cases have come to light in the last few days where the victims did not even know until they themselves checked their bank balance.
According to the report of Dainik Jagran, in these incidents neither the victims clicked on any suspicious link nor shared their banking information, yet a large amount was withdrawn from their accounts. These cases have also become a challenge for the cyber police because till now the frauds that used to happen were linked to some active trigger like call, message or OTP. But these new cases are like a completely silent fraud, where the user does not even get a clue.
About Rs 2.5 lakh was deducted from the account of Arun Kumar, who lives in Colonelganj, Prayagraj, in two installments. He neither got an OTP nor any alert. He got the information only when he updated his passbook.
Similarly, the same thing happened with Ashok Kumar Singh of Kalindipuram. ₹2.43 lakh disappeared from his account and he did not even get any message. When he approached the police, he did not get any satisfactory answer from there either.
After 11 such cases coming to light in just one week, there is an atmosphere of fear especially among the elderly and women. People are now becoming uncomfortable with mobile banking and digital transactions. These incidents not only raise questions on the security of the banking system but also bring out the negligence of the banks, because many victims say that they got the transaction alert very late or no alert came at all.
In this type of fraud, criminals resort to fake apps that look like the original ones on Google Play Store. As soon as these are downloaded, 'silent malware' enters the phone. After this, the user's banking details are stolen through ways like SIM cloning, network hacking and public Wi-Fi. Since all this happens silently, the user does not know until the damage is done.
According to Cyber Cell officer Vinod Kumar, people have to be cautious themselves. Keep only necessary and official apps in the phone, especially in the device that contains banking related information. Avoid any unknown link, fake app or public Wi-Fi. Do not share OTP, UPI PIN or password with anyone. If you become a victim of any cyber crime, immediately call 1930 or lodge a complaint on cybercrime.gov.in.
