Incidents of cyber fraud are increasing day by day, every day someone is becoming a victim of fraud. Fraudsters always keep an eye on your money, which is why cybercriminals find new tricks to trap you. Now a new report that has come out recently has not only warned about the increasing cases of cybercrime, but this report also states that AI has now become the new 'weapon' of fraudsters.

In 2024, digital fraud caused a loss of Rs 22,812 crore (2.78 billion dollars), most of which was caused by AI. This information has been given in The State of AI-Powered Cyber Crime: Threat and Mitigation Report 2025, jointly released by GIREM (Global Initiative for Restructuring Environment and Management) and automotive tech firm Tekion.

AI's hand in 8 out of 10 scams
The report highlights that cybercriminals are using AI to commit scams like phishing emails, fake websites, and deepfakes. 80 percent of phishing emails have used AI tools, which means that AI has played a role in 8 out of every 10 phishing scams. Tekion founder and CEO Jay Vijayan said, this report is a warning, it is not just a document telling about cyber threats but this report highlights how much people have suffered due to AI.

Cases increased 10 times.
In India, 1.91 million (about 19 lakh 10 thousand) complaints of cybercrime were registered in 2024, which is more than 1.55 million compared to 2023 and has increased almost ten times since 2019. There are many other shocking revelations in the report such as cases related to financial fraud have increased three times in just 1 year. Last year (2024), Indians lost Rs 1936 crore by getting trapped in digital arrest scams, and the last four years, cybercriminals have defrauded companies and people of a total of Rs 33000 crore.

Cybercriminals are using AI to create fake apps that look like original apps and through these fake apps malware is inserted into your phone. After installing the app, as soon as you run the app, this malware steals your personal information.
