These days, scammers are using a new method to defraud people. They are sending fake e-challan messages, luring people to fake websites, and then stealing their card details.

A major online scam is currently targeting vehicle owners across the country. Cybersecurity company Cyble has discovered that people are being defrauded through 36 fake websites that look exactly like the official e-Challan portal. Scammers have devised this new method, and it doesn't even require people to download any app. People are falling into their trap with just a single message. Let's understand how this entire scam works.

Scammers are Trapping People by Sending Messages

First, scammers send messages to people from an Indian phone number. When this number is searched, it appears to be associated with the State Bank of India. This makes people easily trust it. The message states that a traffic challan has been issued, and the amount is usually kept small. To create a sense of urgency, a 24-hour deadline is also given. The message also threatens legal action if the deadline is missed. A link is included in the message, which redirects the user to a fake website.

The Rest of the Scam Happens on the Fake Website

The fake website is designed to look exactly like the official government website. It uses the same logo and colors as the government website. As soon as the user enters their vehicle number, it displays a fake challan record. Then the user is taken to a payment page. Only credit and debit card payments are accepted on this page. As soon as the user enters their card details, the money and card information are transferred to the scammers.

How to Protect Yourself from Such Scams?

Do not open links in messages received from any unknown number.
Always use the official transport website to check your challans. If a website is only offering you the option to pay by card, be cautious.
If you keep receiving such messages from unknown numbers, report them immediately.
