Credit Card Rules: Wallet stolen on the train containing your credit card—where should you file a complaint?

You have likely traveled by train at some point in your life. Even if you haven't, you have surely heard that one must keep their belongings secure while traveling by train to avoid theft. Purses and wallets—containing personal items—are frequently stolen in places like trains, metros, and buses.

It becomes a major problem if your credit card or ATM card is inside such a stolen wallet. Since credit cards have become a necessity for everyone today, let’s look at what steps you should take if your card is lost or stolen.

**Block the card immediately without delay**
As soon as you realize your card is missing, get it blocked right away. There are three easy ways to do this:

*   **Mobile App or Net Banking:** Log in to your bank's official app or net banking portal. Navigate to the 'Manage Cards' or 'Block Card' option and block the card immediately.

*   **Call Customer Care:** You can also have the card blocked by calling the bank's 24x7 helpline number.

*   **Send an SMS:** Many banks offer the facility to block the card via a simple text message. (For example, for an SBI card: send an SMS from your registered mobile number with the text "BLOCK " to 5676791).

**File a police complaint (FIR)**
If your card is stolen, visit the nearest police station immediately. File a written complaint to register an FIR or a 'Lost Report.' Keep a copy of the police complaint and the complaint number safe; this copy will be crucial as evidence if any fraudulent transactions occur on your card.

**What to do if fraud occurs on the card?**
If, after your card is stolen, you receive a notification for a transaction you did not authorize, inform the bank without wasting a single minute. According to RBI guidelines, if you promptly report an unauthorized transaction to the bank, the liability for the loss rests with the bank, not with you. Can I get a replacement card if I lose mine?
The simple answer is yes. If you lose your card, you can certainly get a replacement. After blocking the old card, you can have the bank cancel it entirely and request a new one (card reissue). The new credit card will be delivered to your home address within a few days.

Don't forget to update Auto-Pay settings.
We often set up Auto-Pay on our credit cards for utility bills (like electricity and water), Netflix, or other subscriptions. Since your old card has been blocked, make sure to update your new card details with these apps and service providers as soon as you receive the new card to ensure your essential bill payments are not interrupted.
