The loan taken from the card between 3 months and 12 months has reached Rs 33,886.5 crore, which is much higher than Rs 23,475.6 crore in March 2024 last year.

According to the Indian Express report, the outstanding amount in the category of 91-360 days overdue has increased by more than 44%. At the same time, the outstanding amount in the category of 91-180 days reached Rs 29,983.6 crore, which is more than Rs 20,872.6 crore last year. Apart from this, the outstanding amount for 181-360 days has become 1.1 percent, which was 0.8 percent in the year 2024.

At the same time, in May 2025 alone, payments worth Rs 1.89 lakh crore were made through credit cards. According to the data of the Reserve Bank of India, by May 2025, the number of credit cards increased to 11.11 crore, which was only 6.10 crore in January 2021.

These days, banks and fintech companies are luring customers by giving very attractive offers on cashback and EMI. This has increased the number of users tremendously. But, if the payment is not made on time, then 42-46% annual interest may have to be paid, which can trap people in a debt trap. Credit cards are used more by working people. Those who hope that their salary will come on a fixed date and they will repay the card payment. However, due to a lack of balance between expenditure and income, the card's EAIP is not activated and the overdue data keeps increasing.
