Beware of fake apps offering instant loans. Before downloading an app, verify the lender’s identity, RBI accreditation, interest rates, charges, privacy policy, and required permissions to ensure your personal data remains secure.

Nowadays, apps claiming to provide loans within minutes are easily found on mobile phones. Lured by offers like minimal paperwork, instant approval, and low interest rates, people often download these apps without proper verification. However, this haste can lead to financial loss and the misuse of personal information.

Most fake loan apps present themselves as legitimate financial services and may solicit sensitive personal information—such as Aadhaar details, PAN card numbers, and banking data—from users. Therefore, before availing of any digital loan, it is crucial to identify the actual lender behind the app and the institution they are affiliated with.

First, identify the lender

If you are considering taking a loan through an app, first check which bank or NBFC is backing it. Exercise caution if the lender’s name is missing, if details regarding interest rates and other charges are unavailable, or if the app promises a loan immediately after a credit assessment.

According to Pooja Abhishek Singh, CEO of Manipal Fintech, red flags requiring further investigation include vague information about the lender, excessive app permission requests, and claims of instant approval.

Availability on the App Store is not enough

The mere availability of an app on the Google Play Store does not guarantee its credibility. Before downloading an app, you should check the developer’s name, privacy policy, customer support details, and user reviews. Furthermore, it is crucial to cross-verify the information provided in the app with the official website of the relevant financial institution. If there is even the slightest discrepancy between the information from the two sources, treat it as a red flag and exercise caution.

Verify the lender with the RBI

Ensure you know whether the lending entity is a bank or an NBFC. You can verify this through official RBI sources. It is also essential to check whether the digital lending app is affiliated with a regulated entity. Simply seeing the name or logo of a major financial institution does not guarantee the app’s legitimacy.

Why are permissions for contacts and call logs requested?

If a loan app requests access to your contacts, call logs, or media files, consider why such information is actually needed for the loan process. While some permissions—such as camera access during KYC—may be necessary, it is important to understand the purpose of each permission and at what stage it is being requested.

Don’t rush into a loan just because of low interest rates

Do not make a decision based solely on the low interest rate advertised for a loan. Borrowers should also consider the APR, processing fees, other charges, loan tenure, repayment schedule, and the total amount payable. Often, a loan advertised with a low interest rate does not remain as affordable once additional charges are factored in. Therefore, it is vital to understand the total cost of the loan rather than focusing only on the interest rate.

Understand the need before sharing Aadhaar and PAN details

Information such as Aadhaar and PAN details may be requested for KYC or credit checks. However, before sharing personal information, it is important to understand why it is being collected and for what purpose it will be used. Experts advise providing necessary information only after reading the privacy policy and entering sensitive data solely on the lender’s official platform.
