There is great news offering significant relief to commuters in Delhi. There will no longer be a need to stand in long queues at toll plazas or wait for barriers to open. A barrier-free toll system has been launched in the capital, allowing vehicles to pass through seamlessly without stopping, while the toll amount is deducted automatically. This will save people's time and make commuting much easier than before.

Union Minister for Road Transport and Highways, Nitin Gadkari, inaugurated this new facility at the Mundka-Bakkarwala toll plaza on Delhi's Urban Extension Road-II (UER-II). With this launch, Delhi has become the second city in the country to introduce a barrier-less toll system utilizing Multi-Lane Free Flow (MLFF) technology. Previously, this technology was implemented on the Surat-Bharuch highway in Gujarat.

**What is the Barrier-less Toll System?**
Under this new technology, there are no physical barriers at the toll plaza. Vehicles pass through directly without stopping, while overhead cameras and sensors scan the vehicle's registration number and FASTag. Subsequently, the toll amount is deducted automatically. This system is known as Multi-Lane Free Flow, or MLFF technology. Its primary objective is to reduce traffic congestion at toll plazas and expedite travel.

**What are the Benefits for Commuters?**
This new arrangement will eliminate the long queues typically seen at toll plazas. It will save people's time and also result in reduced fuel consumption for vehicles. Furthermore, pollution caused by the constant stop-and-go movement of traffic is also expected to decrease. The government states that, in the near future, this system will make the country's entire highway network smarter and more efficient.

**Expansion of the New System Across the Country**
The National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) is now preparing to implement this technology across several states in the country. Following Delhi and Gujarat, this system is scheduled to be launched at 17 toll plazas across various states—including Haryana, Rajasthan, Tamil Nadu, Karnataka, Maharashtra, and Assam—by September 2026. In the second phase of the rollout, more than 100 additional toll plazas will be brought under the ambit of this system. Keep These Points in Mind
The NHAI has advised motorists to always maintain a sufficient balance in their FASTags. If a toll payment fails, an e-notice will be issued. It will be mandatory to make the payment within 72 hours of receiving the notice. Failure to make a timely payment may result in having to pay double the toll amount.

Additionally, it has been stipulated that vehicles must be equipped with a High Security Registration Plate (HSRP) so that cameras can easily scan the registration numbers.
