CNG Price: CNG prices in Maharashtra have been hiked by ₹2 per kilogram, bringing the current rate to ₹84 per kilogram. Consequently, transportation costs in Mumbai are now expected to rise.

CNG Price Hike in Maharashtra: Mahanagar Gas Limited (MGL) has increased the price of Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) by ₹2 per kilogram across the Mumbai Metropolitan Region (MMR). Effective May 14, the retail price has reached ₹84 per kilogram. This new rate applies to Mumbai, Thane, Navi Mumbai, and the surrounding areas within the MMR. Previously, the price of CNG stood at ₹82 per kilogram. The new rates came into effect at midnight on May 14, 2026.

What is the New Rate Now?

In Mumbai, Navi Mumbai, Thane, and neighboring areas, the new rate for CNG is now ₹84 per kilogram, up from the previous rate of ₹82 per kilogram. Meanwhile, in Pune, the new price for CNG has risen to ₹92.25 per kilogram in areas such as Pimpri-Chinchwad, Chakan, Talegaon, and Hinjewadi.

Why Did Prices Rise Suddenly?

According to Mahanagar Gas Limited (MGL), operating costs have increased due to rising global crude oil prices and the higher cost of importing gas from international markets. The depreciation of the Indian Rupee against the US Dollar has made gas imports even more expensive; therefore, the price hike was implemented to offset these increased costs.

Impact on the General Public

This price hike is expected to increase operating expenses for owners of both public transport vehicles and private cars that run on CNG within the Mumbai Metropolitan Region. According to MGL, approximately 1.28 million vehicles in the MMR run on CNG. This figure includes around 470,000 auto-rickshaws, over 160,000 taxis, and more than 500,000 private cars. Following the hike, auto-rickshaw unions have demanded a fare revision. The unions have sought an increase of at least ₹1 in the base fare, stating that repeated hikes in fuel prices are impacting drivers' earnings.
