CNG PNG Price: Common man to get a big gift from January 1st, how much cheaper will CNG and PNG become?
The common man is now set to get relief from the rising prices of CNG and PNG. According to available information, the PNGRB (Petroleum and Natural Gas Regulatory Board) has modified the unified tariff system for gas transportation.
This change has been made keeping in mind the "One Nation, One Grid, One Tariff" principle. The objective of this change is to reduce the varying transportation charges across the country. The change in charges will also impact the prices of CNG and PNG.
According to media reports, the changes in the unified tariff system will save the gas distribution industry approximately ₹1,000 crore annually.
How much will CNG and PNG prices decrease?
This change in charges under the unified tariff system could directly impact the prices of CNG and PNG. According to media reports:
CNG prices could decrease by approximately ₹1.25 to ₹2.50 per kg.
In addition, PNG prices could see a reduction of ₹0.90 to ₹1.80 per SCM.
If PNG prices decrease, it will benefit those who use PNG for their vehicles and for cooking gas.
Now, let's understand what changes have been made to the unified tariff system.
What are the changes?
Previously, natural gas transportation was divided into three tariff zones. The transportation charges increased with distance. This charge also affected the prices of CNG and PNG. The PNGRB then decided to divide the tariff into two zones: 300 kilometers or more than 300 kilometers.
This change will be implemented on January 1, 2026. Under the new system:
Transportation charge up to 300 kilometers: ₹54 per MMBTU
Transportation charge for more than 300 kilometers: ₹102.86 per MMBTU
However, consumers will only have to pay a transportation charge of ₹54 per MMBTU regardless of the distance.
