You applied for a loan, your salary is good, all the documents are correct, but still, the bank rejected your application. The reason given was - 'bad CIBIL score'. When you took out your CIBIL report, you were shocked. It shows the EMI of a loan that you never took, or an old repaid loan, is shown as 'active'.

If this has happened to you, too, then do not panic. Mistakes in a credit report are a common thing. The good news is that you can get these mistakes corrected sitting at home, online, and absolutely free. Let's know the complete step-by-step process.

What kind of mistakes can be in your CIBIL report?

Mistake in personal information: Your name spelling, address, or PAN number may be wrong.

Wrong account or loan appearing: Someone else's loan or credit card may appear in your name.

Wrong showing of outstanding amount: You have repaid the loan, but it is still showing as 'active' or 'overdue'.

Error in ownership: An account is shown as 'joint' instead of 'individual'.

1. Through the CIBIL website

Visit the official website of CIBIL and log in to your account.

Select 'Dispute Centre' under the 'Credit Report' section.

Select 'Dispute an Item', fill out the online form, and submit.

After submission, you will get a Dispute ID through which you can track the status of your complaint.

2. Helpline and email

Call: +91-22-6140 4300

Email: Send a detailed complaint using the email ID available on the CIBIL website.

3. Through a letter
If you do not want to complain online or over the phone, you can also complain by sending a letter to the registered office of CIBIL.

What happens next? (30-day game)
Verification: After receiving your complaint, CIBIL does not change the information itself. It sends your complaint to the concerned bank or NBFC for verification, which had reported the information.
Bank's response: Now the bank checks its records and tells CIBIL whether the information is correct or wrong.
Correction in the report: If the bank accepts that the information was wrong, it asks to correct it, and CIBIL updates your report.
Time limit: This entire process usually takes 25 to 30 days.
