Artificial intelligence platform ChatGPT will now be available in India in rupees. OpenAI has started a pilot of local pricing in the country, allowing users to pay directly in Indian currency instead of dollars. Earlier, Indian users had to subscribe in dollars, which made the price high for many people.

New plans and prices

Under the pilot program, the price of the ChatGPT Plus plan has been fixed at ₹ 1,999 per month (including GST). At the same time, the Pro plan will be available for ₹ 19,900 per month, and the Team plan for ₹ 2,099 per seat per month. Earlier, these plans were purchased in dollars for $ 20 (about ₹ 1,750), $ 200 (about ₹ 17,500), and $ 30 (about ₹ 2,600), respectively.

This change comes shortly after the launch of GPT-5, which now offers better performance in 12 Indian languages. Localization is expected to make ChatGPT more relevant and easier to use for Indian users.

A cheaper plan of ₹399 is also possible.

According to reports, OpenAI may soon also bring a budget-friendly plan called ChatGPT Go, which may cost ₹399 per month. This plan will target students, casual users, and first-time AI users.

The demand for local pricing arose during OpenAI CEO Sam Altman's visit to India in February 2025. Startup founders and developers had reported difficulty in adopting payments in dollars. OpenAI's VP of Engineering, Srinivas Narayanan had already indicated that the company is working on making its tools more affordable in India.

Increasing competition in the AI market

India has become OpenAI's second largest market after the US, and Altman believes that it may soon overtake the US in ChatGPT usage. However, OpenAI is facing tough competition here. Perplexity AI has offered a year of free premium subscription to Bharti Airtel's 360 million customers, while Google is giving a year of free AI tools to Indian college students.

Through this local pricing pilot, OpenAI not only wants to make AI affordable for Indian users, but also wants to strengthen its hold in the fast-growing AI market.
