OpenAI has shut down a feature of ChatGPT that made users ' conversations visible on Google search. Due to this feature, thousands of chats came into the public domain, some of which also contained sensitive information related to the identity of the users.

Personal things were getting leaked.

OpenAI's Chief Information Security Officer (CISO) Dan Stucky gave this information by posting on X (formerly Twitter). This was a feature of ChatGPT that allowed users to share their conversations on search engines (like Google). The company was running this feature as an experiment.

This feature was completely opt-in; that is, the chat was made public only at the will of the user. But according to reports, many people inadvertently activated this option, especially when they were sharing chats with their friends or family.

What was the controversy?

OpenAI had added an option to ChatGPT some time ago so that users could make their conversations public on search engines. Although it was not on by default, many users accidentally turned it on.

According to a Fast Company report, more than 4,500 chats were indexed on Google. Many of these contained personal information such as name, location, and other identifying information. This put the users' privacy at risk.

People share personal things.
OpenAI CEO Sam Altman also said in a podcast that people share the most personal things of their lives with ChatGPT. The biggest concern is that even if a user deletes the chat later, that content can still remain in Google's search results until Google updates its indexing.

OpenAI is now working with search engine companies to remove chats that have already been indexed.
