Chat on WhatsApp using a username instead of a number; here’s how to reserve your unique name
WhatsApp is set to launch a username feature that will allow users to chat using a username instead of a mobile number. The company has already initiated username reservations. This new feature will further enhance user privacy and will be rolled out to everyone in phases over the coming months.
Notably, the company has started username reservations globally, enabling users to secure their preferred unique username in advance. Once the feature arrives, users will be able to use their username instead of their phone number when interacting with someone for the first time.
How to set a WhatsApp username?
Meta announced on Monday that WhatsApp users can reserve their usernames starting this week. To do this, users must update to the latest version of WhatsApp. Afterward, they can navigate to Settings > Account > Username to select their unique username. This feature is currently being rolled out in phases; WhatsApp will notify users via the app as soon as it becomes available in their country.

What will be the length of the username?
According to the company, a WhatsApp username can range from 3 to 35 characters. Users must choose a unique username that has not already been claimed by someone else.
Chat without revealing your number
The biggest benefit of this feature is enhanced user privacy. If you have activated the username feature, your mobile number will not be shared when interacting with a new person for the first time; instead, your username will be displayed. However, users who prefer to do so can continue using WhatsApp via their mobile number, just as before. In other words, the username feature will be entirely optional.
No username directory
WhatsApp has also confirmed that there will be no public username directory or search system within the app. This means no one will be able to find you simply by typing your name. To contact someone for the first time, the other person will need to have your exact username. This measure is expected to significantly reduce spam and unwanted messages. Additional Security Feature Included
The company is introducing a "Username Key" that users can choose to share separately. This will serve as an extra layer of security, allowing users to control who can initiate a conversation with them using their username.
How to Reserve a Username
If this feature is available on your WhatsApp, follow these simple steps:
Update WhatsApp to the latest version.
Go to Settings and tap on Account.
Select the Username option.
Choose an available username and confirm it.
Can't Find Your Preferred Username?
WhatsApp has stated that if your desired username is already taken, the app will provide a "Username Generator." This tool will suggest various unique and available options, making it easier to select a new username.
Benefits for Creators and Business Users
This feature will be useful not only for general users but also for creators, businesses, and organizations. WhatsApp notes that users who already have an established username on Instagram or Facebook will be able to reserve the same username on WhatsApp. This ensures a consistent digital identity across all Meta platforms.
When Will This Feature Be Available?
WhatsApp has begun rolling out this feature. It will be released to users worldwide in a phased manner over the coming months. Users will be notified via the WhatsApp app once the feature becomes available to them.
