Charges may now have to be paid for mobile verification for many services including UPI. The Department of Telecommunications (DoT) is going to bring a new rule regarding this. This new rule will help in preventing fraud activity. The Department of Telecommunications has proposed changes in the cyber security rules so that incidents of financial frauds can be easily curbed.

According to the PTI report, a new cyber security rule has been drafted for this on June 24. In this, it has been recommended to create a new platform regarding this, in which all those entities have been asked to be included, which have a license to do KYC i.e. customer verification.

What is the new rule?

After the implementation of this rule, it has been proposed to charge for every mobile verification. This charge will be collected from the company or entity raising the verification request. However, these companies charge such charges from the end user only. In such a situation, the user may have to pay this charge for this. The entities doing the verification include banks providing UPI service and all types of government and non-government agencies.

This MNV (Mobile Number Verification) platform proposed by the Department of Telecommunications will check which user or enterprise is currently using the mobile number. Through this new mechanism, it can be traced in the database of authorized entities or license holders.

How much will the charge be?

DoT has mentioned all those entities in the new cyber security rules, which use phone numbers or their transactions to verify customers. These entities are called TIUE or Telecommunication Identifier User Entity. In the new rule, it has been proposed that if the entities are authorized by the central government or state government, then a charge of Rs 1.5 will be taken for each mobile number verification. At the same time, a charge of Rs 3 will be levied for every request by private entities.

For this, the Department of Telecommunications has sought comments on this draft from stakeholders and interested parties in 30 days. This new rule will work to further empower government authorized agencies or law enforcement agencies to get the transaction details of any user.

Banks have made preparations

According to the report, banks are already testing pilot projects to test this new mechanism. This mechanism will work to flag those numbers which are already involved in any fraud activity. These flagged mobile numbers will be deactivated for 90 days. Not only this, the history of that number will also be automatically deleted after 90 days, so that if after 90 days this number is allotted to any other user, then he will not be affected.
