CERT-In Issues Warning for These Users! Here’s the Risk
CERT-In Alert for Google Chrome Users: This issue affects Windows, macOS, and Linux systems. The agency has advised users to update Chrome immediately.
Many people use Google Chrome today, yet they are often unaware of the associated risks. In this context, the Indian Computer Emergency Response Team (CERT-In) has issued a warning for users who access Chrome on desktop computers.
According to media reports, vulnerabilities have been discovered in Chrome that cybercriminals could exploit to hack users' systems or remotely execute code on them. This could lead to hackers gaining control over critical system information or even the entire system itself.
The CERT-In warning specifically targets the desktop version of Google Chrome and affects Windows, macOS, and Linux systems. The agency advises users to update Chrome immediately; failure to do so could expose them to cyberattacks and put sensitive information at risk of falling into the hands of hackers.
Cyber attackers often use fake links, suspicious messages, or fraudulent websites to entrap users. Consequently, users are advised against clicking on any unknown links. However, simply avoiding suspicious links is not enough; keeping the browser updated is crucial, as updates patch vulnerabilities present in older versions.
According to CERT-In, "Use-After-Free" type security vulnerabilities have been found in several components of Chrome, including V8, TabStrip, HTML, Extensions, and Blink. Cyber attackers exploit these flaws to target users through specially crafted webpages or links. In such a scenario, if a user clicks on such a link or opens the website, the cyber attacker gains control over the user's system and can perform malicious actions on it.
Updating Google Chrome is a very simple process. To do this, open Google Chrome on your computer and click on the three-dot menu located at the top right corner. Next, go to 'Help' and click on 'About Google Chrome'. Chrome will then automatically check for available updates; if a new update is available, the browser will begin downloading it.
Once the download is complete, a 'Relaunch' option will appear; click on it. This will install the new version on your system and activate the necessary security patches.
